Research
University of St Andrews
Vincent Janik
Vincent Janik is a professor of biology at the University of St Andrews in Scotland. He has more than 20 years of experience in marine science and leads a research group on marine bioacoustics. Before coming to St Andrews, he worked as a researcher at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. His research is focused on marine mammal acoustics and underwater noise. |
Thomas Götz
Dr Thomas Gӧtz is an Honorary Lecturer and Research Fellow at the University of St Andrews (Scottish Oceans Institute, SMRU) working in the field of marine bio-acoustics, sensory ecology & physiology, applied ecology and acoustic deterrence. Thomas scientific research encompasses studies on the effects of noise on marine mammals, the physiological mechanisms underlying ‘aversiveness’ of sound, the relevance of the startle reflex for the elicitation of flight responses, navigation in seals and echolocation behaviour in dolphins. He designed and completed the first studies on the acoustic startle response in marine mammals demonstrating that the reflex is present in these animals and generally associated with flight and avoidance responses. The applied strand of his work provided the foundation for the development of the targeted acoustic startle technology. Current work involves research on new applications and engineering support for prototype development. |
Design
FifeX
Kenneth Boyd
Ken has been with FifeX since the very beginning and will ensure that projects run smoothly. He also does a lot of the in-house software and electronics development and works with graphics and design tools like Google SketchUp, which is great for visualising things early on in a project. Ken likes to incorporate new things like Arduinos and Phidgets in products to ensure that they're up-to-date and future-proof. |
Paul Neil
Paul is responsible for the majority of the design work at FifeX and works with Solidworks to draw products in 3D for manufacture. His vast experience in electronics has allowed Paul to design some very clever PCBs for use in FifeX's products over the years. Paul's interest in up-to-date gadgetery and cutting-edge IT solutions means FifeX products are as clever and efficient as possible. |
