In addition having a solid scientific foundation, SalmonSafe has proven its effectiveness in real world conditions. In two separate field studies, GenusWave acoustic technology delivered on its promise:
Field Study 1
Purpose: To test long-term efficiency of the SalmonSafe deterrent system and to determine the reduction of predation losses.
Methods: Monitored predation on two control sites and one test site over a one year period.
Results: Zero losses to predation in 10 out of the 12.5 months of the deployment. Zero nets broken in that period as well.
Discussion/Takeaways: Population losses due to predation and equipment losses due to predator attacks are both effectively reduced to zero.
Field Study 2
Purpose: Reducing seal attacks in high risk farms and protecting fully grown salmon during the high predation season.
Results: The first dive report after deployment of SalmonSafe showed no fresh seal-related kills.
Discussion/Takeaways: SalmonSafe prevented a net loss of 5.8 fish per day in each cage during the deployment period, saving the client a projected* £63,600 (USD $85,200).
*Projection based on a fully stocked farm (8 cages) where predation persists for 3 month (90 days), with an average weight of 5 kg per fish, and a sales price to the food retailer of about £3/kg.
